Everyday habits
- Dilute before applying to skin, and start with less than you think you need.
- Keep oils away from eyes, inner ears and other sensitive areas.
- Store bottles closed, out of direct sun, and well out of reach of children and pets.
- Read the label on the specific bottle rather than assuming all brands direct the same use.
- Ventilate the room when you diffuse.
Situations that deserve extra care
Pregnancy and nursing, young children, older adults, pets in the home, existing health conditions and prescription medicines can all change what is appropriate. When any of those apply, checking with a qualified health professional is the sensible step.
Some oils also carry their own specific cautions — for example citrus oils and sun exposure after topical use.
Keep the poison center number handy
Essential oils can be harmful if swallowed, particularly by children. In the U.S., Poison Control is available around the clock at 1-800-222-1222; call emergency services for serious symptoms.
