Start with the concentration
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. A single drop is not comparable to the herb or fruit it came from, and poison centers see real harm from oils being swallowed — most often by children who reach an unattended bottle.
That concentration is the reason internal use is treated as a considered decision rather than a casual one.
Not every product is intended for internal use
Aromatherapy products, cosmetics and dietary products are labeled differently, and how a product is marketed and labeled determines what directions it carries. A bottle intended for aromatic or topical use is not a food product just because the plant it came from is edible.
- Read the actual label and directions on the bottle you own.
- Directions from one manufacturer do not transfer to another brand's product.
- A regular product and a separately labeled dietary or Vitality-type version of the same oil are different products with different directions — treat them that way.
What My Oil Companion does and doesn't do
We are brand-neutral. We record what a manufacturer states about a specific product, and we keep separately labeled products separate. We do not infer internal-use directions from an oil's ingredients or botanical name, and we do not carry ingestion instructions across brands or product lines.
The rule of thumb
Follow the labeling and directions for the specific product you actually own — not what an oil is generally said to be online.
The internet is not your label
Plenty of oils are discussed online as if they were universally ingestible. That tells you nothing about your bottle. Different brands, grades, packaging and regulatory contexts all sit behind the same common oil name.
Personal circumstances matter
Age, pregnancy and nursing, existing health conditions and prescription medicines can all change what is appropriate for an individual, and interactions are possible. If internal use is something you are considering, that is a conversation to have with a qualified healthcare professional who knows your situation — not a decision to take from an app, a forum or a seller.
If an essential oil has been swallowed unintentionally, in the U.S. call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or emergency services for serious symptoms.
